Indonesia Re, the first BUMN holds a meeting onboard a ship

Marine On-Board participants visiting PT. Pal’s shipyard

Jakarta (ANTARA) -- Indonesia Re, Reinsurance State-Owned Corporation, held its insurance and reinsurance industry meeting, namely Marine On-Board, on a Pelni ship cruising from Jakarta to Surabaya on August 30-September 1, 2019. This Marine Hull insurance meeting is the first insurance and reinsurance industry meeting in Indonesia ever held onboard of a ship.

General Reinsurance CEM and Administration Division Head of Indonesia Re, Arie Surya Nugraha, explained that this onboard meeting initiative was for all our ceding companies to oversee first hand what is going on in the field.

“We wanted to give an added value, a different experience for our ceding companies, as by observing and participating directly on the field, we will gain a better understanding of the circumstances of the Marine Hull,” Arie added his explanation in Indonesia Re Jakarta Office last Monday.

With 'Insufficient Tugs Power vs Unseaworthiness' as the main theme, Marine On-Board becomes a strategic platform to socialize Marine Hull’s main issues, especially the occurring claims triggered by tugboat or barge accidents.

Bad weather has often become the scapegoat of the cause of an accident. While after further investigation, the accidents usually happened due to the imbalance of power between tugboats and tonnage.

Tugboat is a vessel that is used to pull or push barges, which is commonly used to carry mines, cargo crates, or even vehicles.
Tugboats’ standard pulling power is 2 x 1.200 horsepower, with its maximum capacity up to 30 tons. Facts happening on the ground, a lot of tugboats with below standard pulling power are being forced to operate, which causes higher tides risking both tugboats and barges to sink.

“The accidents that happened were always being connected to the bad weather, while on the other hand, below standard tugboats could create high waves that could lead to sinking,” he claimed.

Marine Underwriting Department Head, Gadis Purwanti, also added that she will continue to perform socialization to minimize the accident rate due to the lack of information on the field.

“This year we have performed a series of ceding company gatherings, hoping this will prevent accidents caused by technical or non-technical factors,’ she explained.

In another event, Marine Underwriting Manager Tokio Marine Indonesia, Ardi Tri Bernardi, expressed his appreciation of Indonesia Re's breakthrough in socializing Marine Hull current issues.
